WHO KNOWS? מי יודע מדוע ולמה

Today we are going to talk about the difference between

 knowing something for a fact and knowing someone or something, as in being familiar with them.

The verb “to know” in Hebrew splits in two meanings:

לָדַעַת:  

 Binyan Pa’al (root: י.ד.ע).

Knowing a certain fact, or knowing how to do something, is called לָדַעַת.

⭐ The verb לָדַעַת is followed by the preposition SH’EH ש when we wish to say that we know a certain fact.

Examples:

I know that Jerusalem is the capital city of Israel

 אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁיְּרוּשָׁלַיִם הִיא בִּירַת יִשְׂרָאֵל

  I know that this movie is good 

אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ  שֶׁהַסרֶט הַזֶה טוֹב

⭐ The verb לָדַעַת is followed by an infinitive - שם פועל, when we wish to say that we know how to do something.

Examples:

I can dance ( i know how to dance) - אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ לִרקוד

I can play tennis ( i know how to play tennis) - אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ לְשַׂחֵק טֵנִיס

⭐  The verb לָדַעַת  is followed by a question word like מָתַי, לְאָן, אֵיךְ, אֵיפֹה, מִי, מָה, אֵיזֶה, when we wish to say that we know “when” something is taking place, “where” it will take place or a location of something) etc.

Examples:

I know… 

what you did last summer: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ מֶה עָשִׂיתָ בַּקַּיִץ הָאַחֲרוֹן

who acts in that movie : אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ מִי מְשַׂחֵק בַּסֶּרֶט הַזֶּה  

when the game starts: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ מָתַי מַתְחִיל הַמִּשְׂחָק

which shoes im am going to buy: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ אֵיזֶה נַעֲלַיִם אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ לִקְנוֹת

where i am going to: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ לְאָן אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ

where you live: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ אֵיפֹה אַתָּה גָּר

how to say “to know” in Hebrew: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ אֵיךְ לְהַגִּיד “לָדַעַת” בְּעִבְרִית

how much she loves you: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ עַד כַּמָּה

how many cookies are in the jar: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ כַּמָּה

i know why: אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ לָמָּה

⭐ when we just wish to say: “i know that!” we will use the 

preposition ET את:

אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ אֶת זֶה!

לְהַכִּיר

 Binyan Hif’il (root: ה.כ.ר)

Knowing or recognizing a certain person or any definite noun, as in being familiar with them, even without personally knowing them, is called לְהַכִּיר.

⭐The verb לְהַכִּיר is followed by the preposition ET את, when we wish to say that we are familiar with someone or something, or recognizing them.

Examples:

 I know Danny

אֲנִי מַכִּיר אֶת דָּנִי

I know this place (a definite noun)

אֲנִי מַכִּיר אֶת הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה

⭐ The verb לְהַכִּיר could also use the preposition Be’h בְּ, when we wish to say we wish to say we are validating or acknowledging a fact or a noun.

Examples:

I acknowledge the fact that you are a hardworking person

אֲנִי מַכִּיר בָּעֻבְדָּה שֶׁאַתָּה עוֹבֵד חרוּץ

or

אֲנִי מַכִּיר בַּכָּךְ שֶׁאַתָּה עוֹבֵד חרוּץ

The Tel Aviv university recognizes academic degrees from the U.S

אוּנִיבֶרְסִיטַת תֵּל אָבִיב מַכִּירָה בִּתְאָרִים אָקָדֵמִיִּים מֵאַרְצוֹת הַבְּרִית

Advanced Examples:

i know who Michael Jordan is, but i don’t know him.

אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ מִי זֶה מַיְקֶל ג'וֹרְדֶּן,  אֲבָל אֲנִי לֹא מַכִּיר אוֹתוֹ.

I know the coffee shop down the road, and I know it is open now.

אֲנִי מַכִּיר אֶת בֵּית הַקָּפֶה בְּסוֹף הָרְחוֹב, וַאֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁהוּא פָּתוּחַ עַכְשָׁיו

I know you like Sarah, but i don’t know her

אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁאַתָּה מְחַבֵּב אֶת שָׂרָה, אֲבָל אֲנִי לֹא מַכִּיר אוֹתָהּ.

Did you know that next week Bob Dylan is coming to Israel?

Yes, everyone knows that!

אתה יודע שבוב דילן בא לישראל בשבוע הבא?
