What Is O’d (עוֹד)?

Today we are going to talk about the word “More”:

In English:

We use the word “More” to describe More of something:

“I need More time”,

and also, as the comparison expression (“More Than…”), especially in longer words: 

“More beautiful Than…”

In Hebrew:

There is a dedicated word for each one of these situations:

O’d: עוד - Another / More Of…

In Hebrew we use the word “עוד” as “More of…” / “Another…”

For example:

Let’s say you are at the Tel-Aviv University coffee shop (בֵּית - קַפֵה).

You order a cup of coffee,  and now you wish to have One More cup of coffee, or Another cup of coffee.

This in Hebrew means: “עוד”, and is equivalent to “Another” (cup of coffee).

"אפשר בבקשה עוד כוס קפה?"

More of: יותר

…However, this time you wish to have More milk in your coffee Than you had in the first cup.

in this case, “More” in Hebrew means “יותר”.

"אפשר כוס קפה עם יותר חלב?"

why?

Because it is a Comparative “More”. 

it is not just “more of” something, it is “more than” and therefore, we will use the word “יותר”.

Now you want to ask for Another cup of coffee with More milk (Than the first cup of coffee):

עוד כוס קפה עם יותר חלב.

But that’s not all!

enclosing this two words together: עוד + יותר, 

creates the English expression: “Even More”. which will be followed by an adjective, in order to intensify that adjective.

Just like “even…” can be followed by “better” (more good), or “Taller” (More Tall), or any other adjective like “Smaller” (more small) or “bigger” (more big),the Hebrew expression עוד יותר will be followed by “טוב”, “רע” (good, bad, etc.) or any other adjective.

Example:

יוסי יותר גבוה משמואל, ומשה אפילו עוד יותר גבוה (מיוסי)!
